After doing some research for a education documentary project I am working on for the non-profit, I came upon this quote by Diogenes:

“The foundation of every state is the education of its youth.” -Diogenes
This made me think, “Why is this idea so common?”. For example, we can find it in the United States Constitution that says everyone has an equal right to an education [1]. This isn’t a new idea; for example, Diogenes said this himself [2]. But why is it important? Well, in the same source, it is said that more college dropouts mean more economic recession or stagnation [2]. But it isn’t about money; It’s also essentially vital for personal growth and societal progress [3].
Education provides individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to participate fully in society, fostering critical thinking and problem-solving abilities that are crucial for personal development [3]. It also encourages social awareness and civic responsibility, helping citizens contribute positively to their communities and promoting societal cohesion [3].
At a broader level, ensuring equal access to education strengthens the foundation of a state. Societies that invest in education experience more stable economies, lower crime rates, and greater innovation, as an educated population is better equipped to face social and economic challenges [1], [2]. In this sense, education is not only a personal asset but a strategic societal resource, essential for sustainable growth and long-term progress [2], [3].
Moreover, education acts as a bridge across social and economic divides. By providing opportunities to marginalized groups, it reduces inequality and enables individuals to pursue careers and ambitions that might otherwise be inaccessible [3]. This equalizing effect is crucial for creating a fairer society where talent and effort are rewarded, rather than inherited status or wealth.
Additionally, education nurtures creativity and innovation, allowing individuals to imagine new solutions to old problems. Countries that prioritize education often see accelerated technological advancements, improved healthcare, and more effective governance, demonstrating that learning is directly linked to societal advancement [1], [2].
In conclusion, education is far more than a legal right or an economic necessity; it is the cornerstone of individual fulfillment and collective progress. Ensuring access to quality education empowers people, strengthens communities, and drives the sustainable development of society as a whole [1]–[3].
